Why Pre-Season Maintenance Matters
Cooling systems endure their maximum stress during peak summer months. Systems that have been dormant or operating at low capacity during winter may struggle to meet the sudden, intense demand. Pre-season maintenance is an engineering best practice to ensure reliability and prevent costly emergency breakdowns.
Critical Pre-Summer Checks
- Coil Deep Cleaning: Both evaporator and condenser coils must be thoroughly cleaned. Dirt accumulation restricts airflow and insulates the coils, drastically reducing the system's ability to absorb and reject heat.
- Airflow Verification: Clean filters and unblocked ductwork are essential. Restricted airflow can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, potentially leading to liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor (slugging).
- Electrical Component Testing: Capacitors and contactors should be tested under load. These components are prone to failure during extreme heat, and identifying weak components beforehand prevents sudden outages.
- Drainage Inspection: High humidity during summer results in significant condensation. Clogged condensate drains can cause water damage and trigger safety switches that shut down the system.
